How to Install WordPress Theme Manually Using FTP

In this tutorial i have explained in detail how you can install WordPress theme manually using FTP.

You can also install WordPress theme using WordPress built-in functionality as described in the following tutorial.

Using FTP we can also install multiple themes quickly so this method is more useful when you want to install more than one theme or when the above WordPress built-in functionality doesn’t work for you or else you can just use the WordPress built-in functionality to install WordPress theme as described in the above tutorial.

To install WordPress theme on your site manually you will need access of your site via FTP or file manager provided in your host’s control panel such as cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk etc.

Let’s see in detail how we can install WordPress theme manually using FTP and File manager.

Before Installing WordPress Theme Manually

Please make sure that you have WordPress theme directory before installing it manually so if you have WordPress theme in archive format then extract it on your system locally as described on this page but please make sure to preserve directory structure of it when extracting the files from the archive.

How to Install WordPress Theme Manually Using FTP Client

The site FTP access details are provided by hosting provider so if you don’t have it then contact your host to get it or if you have control panel access of your site then you can create FTP account of your site as described on the following pages.

After getting FTP details of your site you will need FTP client to use these FTP details to connect to your site. There are various free and paid FTP clients that you can use to access your site but the one that i recommend is FileZilla which is a free software and also it’s cross-platform so it runs on various operating systems.

You can download FileZilla client from the site https://filezilla-project.org/ and install it on your system as described on this page https://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Client_Installation

You are now ready to upload and install WordPress theme on your site after downloading and configuring FileZilla client with your FTP details.

Now just upload this theme directory on your server using FTP client FileZilla in your WordPress site themes directory wp-content/themes as displayed in the following screenshot.

After uploading the theme the is installed on your site and is ready to get activated as described below.

How to Install WordPress Theme Manually Using File Manager

To install WordPress theme manually using file manager you have to get access of your site host’s control panel such as cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk etc. so please contact your site hosting provider if you don’t have access of it.

Here in this tutorial i am going to tell you how to install WordPress theme manually using cPanel file manager but the process is almost same for other control panel file manager.

So first of all log in to the cPanel by entering the cPanel login details in the login screen as displayed below.

After logging in to cPanel just click on File Manager icon to access file manager as displayed in the below screenshot.

Then in the file manager access the themes directory wp-content/themes and upload your WordPress theme directory in it as displayed in the following screenshot.

Your theme is now uploaded and installed on your WordPress site and is ready to activate as described below.

How to Activate WordPress Theme Installed Manually

After uploading your theme directory on your site server in the themes directory wp-content/themes the theme gets installed on your WordPress site and gets displayed in the WordPress themes screen in the admin area but if it doesn’t display there then please make sure that the uploaded theme directory is in correct stricture and it has correct file permissions applied as described on this page Permission Scheme for WordPress.

You can now activate the installed WordPress theme from the themes screen as described in the section “Activate Any Installed WordPress Theme” in this tutorial How to Install WordPress Theme.

You can also activate the theme without accessing your site admin area but for that you have to edit your WordPress site database.
