I hope you are well today and thank you for your question.

You can achieve this by adding the below CSS code in the Custom CSS option of Add Search To Menu plugin settings on the path Settings -> Add Search To Menu

#masthead .col-md-4.col-sm-8.col-xs-12 {
    width: auto;
#masthead .col-md-8.col-sm-4.col-xs-12 {
    width: auto;

.astm-search-menu input.search-field {
    width: 140px;
    height: auto;
    line-height: 1.5;

.astm-search-menu input.search-submit {
    line-height: 1;
    padding: 10px 5px;
    font-size: 12px;

.astm-search-menu form label {
    float: left;

#mainnav li.astm-search-menu {
    padding-right: 0;

has a huge button with ‘search’ written on it (i want the magnifying glass instead)

It highly depends on the theme that you are using and it seems the Sydney theme you are using on your site doesn’t display search form with magnifying glass icon.

Alternatively you can try setting Search form style to Dropdown and leaving Search Menu Title field empty as shown in the attached screenshot.
