In this tutorial we are going to see how to set featured image or post thumbnail in WordPress.
What is Featured Image or Post Thumbnail in WordPress
In WordPress you can associate an image to the post or page which is called Featured Image or Post Thumbnail of that post or page.
Most WordPress plugins and themes uses this featured image to display it along with the post or page. This featured image is displayed by plugin and theme using the WordPress function the_post_thumbnail or get_the_post_thumbnail so the theme that you are using on your site should use any of these functions to display the featured images on your site.
In the following screenshot you can see how the WordPress default Twenty Sixteen theme uses featured image to display it along with post on posts listings page like blog page and on single post page.
If you have not set any featured image for the post then the Twenty Sixteen theme doesn’t display any image associated with the post as shown in the below screenshot so let’s see how to set featured image or post thumbnail in WordPress so that it will be displayed along with post.
How to Set Featured Image or Post Thumbnail in WordPress
You can set featured image or post thumbnail in WordPress by visiting the post or page edit screen and clicking on the link “Set featured image” as shown in the following screenshot.
If you don’t see the “Featured Image” metabox that contains the link “Set featured image” in post and page edit screen then you can enable it from the Screen Options by checking the option “Featured Image” as displayed in the following screenshot.
