In this tutorial i have described in detail how you can install WordPress theme and use it on your WordPress site.
There are various ways to install and use WordPress themes on the WordPress site but in this tutorial we will see the builtin automatic WordPress methods to install WordPress themes and in the next tutorial we will see manual WordPress theme installation method which needs FTP access of the site.
Go To WordPress Themes Screen To Install WordPress Theme
WordPress provides functionality in its admin area to install and activate WordPress themes but this functionality is only available for WordPress users having role as an Administrator or Super Admin in case of WordPress multisite so you have to make sure that your WordPress user account has any of these roles and then just log in to your WordPress site admin area.
After going in to your WordPress site admin area just visit the Themes page on the path Admin Area -> Appearance -> Themes and click on the “Add New” button as shown in the following screenshot.
After clicking on the “Add New” button you will get a screen as following which will provide you two options to install WordPress themes which are described below.
Activate the WordPress Theme to Use it
Please keep in mind that when you install the WordPress Theme on your site then it doesn’t get activated and you have to activate it manually as described below so you can install many themes on your site but there is always only one theme active on the site.
When you activate the theme on your site then it changes the appearance of your site and you may have to reconfigure the site menu, widgets etc. if they are different from your existing activated theme so you can install theme any time but think twice before activating it on your production site.
Install a WordPress Theme from the Official WordPress Themes Repository
To install WordPress theme from the official WordPress themes repository just visit the Add Themes screen in your WordPress site admin area as described above and search the desired WordPress theme by entering its name in the “Search themes” field or using WordPress theme feature filter or by theme popularity as shown in the below screenshot.
After searching and choosing the desired theme just hover over that theme and click on the displayed “Install” button to install that theme on your site as shown in the following screenshot.
You can now activate the installed theme from WordPress themes repository on clicking the displayed “Activate” link as displayed in the below screenshot.
Install WordPress Theme from Zip File
If you have downloaded the WordPress zip file then you can install it on your site by uploading it as described below.
If you don’t have WordPress zip file but just the WordPress theme directory then you can create zip file of that WordPress theme directory as described on this page http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Zip-File.
To install the downloaded WordPress theme on your site just visit the “Add Themes” screen on your site as described above and then click on the “Upload Theme” button displayed on that screen as shown in the following screenshot.
Then click on the “Choose File” button in the displayed screen to choose your downloaded WordPress theme in zip format and then click on the “Install Now” button to install the chosen theme on your site as shown in the following screenshot.
You can now activate the installed theme uploaded on your site by clicking on the “Activate” link displayed on the screen as shown in the following screenshot.
Change Active WordPress Theme
You can activate any installed WordPress theme by visiting the WordPress Themes page in the admin area of your site on the path Admin Area -> Appearance -> Themes and then hover over the installed theme that you want to activate and click on the displayed “Activate” button as shown in the following screenshot.
